Theological research at UP: Anchored in Africa, reaching into the world

The Faculty of Theology has engaged in interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary research on a wide spectrum of strategic academic and societal interests ranging from social cohesion, social ethics and leadership, missional church to narrative pastoral care and to actual biblical-hermeneutical challenges to the influential science-theology discourses. Much of the research has as focus the problem of poverty, the challenges of reconciliation and the need for restorative justice, involving key role players in different sectors of society, industry and academia.

The latest metrics and rankings of the QS ranking system (8 March 2017) categorizes the Faculty in their new category of ‘Theology, Divinity & Religious Studies’ UP a position between 51-100 in the world. According to the QS webpage, Pretoria rates #28 in the world with respect to citations per paper and #14 in the world with respect to H-Index citations. This puts UP first in Africa and significantly higher than many renowned institutions in Europe, the UK and the USA.

It is undisputed that UP has in most respects the leading Faculty, nationally and in Africa. Internationally the Faculty is respected, influential and competitive.
