Mr Ezekiel Moraka, who is the head of the department, holds a Master of Education (Management) degree for which he studied at the University of Pretoria. He is currently doing his doctoral studies in Educational Management. Some of the activities that he is involved in, include:

  • Management of the Department
  • Academic orientation
  • Handling of student problems such as:
    • financial problems
    • intervention in conflict situations (e.g. residences and faculties)
    • facilitation of positive relationships between various cultural groups within the campus

Dr du Toit also completed her doctoral studies at the University of Pretoria and she specializes in Stress and Coping Skills. Amongst other things, she has developed computer based programs in stress and study methods and has presented on this in the Netherlands in 1991. She also made a video on exam stress; this is available in the department.

Her approach to student support is holistic (for example, she looks at physical health, sleeping, eating habits, etc.)


COUNSELLING PSYCHOLOGIST (MISS MELODY NGCUKA)

Miss Ngcuka joined Student Support in 1996 and she is presently busy with her doctoral studies. Her specialization is therapy and group based work. Amongst other things, she presents life skills programmes (for example, interpersonal skills, life coping skills, dealing with trauma, etc.) in the department.


SOCIAL WORKER (MRS MADELEINE NOLTE)
(BA - SOCIAL SCIENCES)

Mrs Nolte obtained a BA(Social Work) and a MA(Social Work) at the University of Pretoria. At present she is doing her PhD with the title: "Lifeskills development: an empowerment program for young adults".

She is a social worker on campus, dealing witht the various problems, needs and development of all students. Problemsin respect of interpersonal relationships, self-concept, stress, depression, trauma and emotional problems that adversely effect academic performance, are dealt with.

The relationship en enrichment course, discussing her fourteen components of a relationship is a field Madeleine specializes in. She is also a lecturer in practical, social work for final year students and assists Tuks Rag and other departments and faculties with the identification and development of community projects such as assistance in rural education, sport and culture days for squattercamps, workshops and life-skills development.

INTERNSHIP

There are students final year students doing internship both in Psychology and Social Work working in the department. They form part of the staff membership.
