Sonop Christelike Tehuis was established by the Dutch Reformed Church in 1916 with the purpose of providing accommodation to male students of the University of Pretoria. Today, Sonop is one of the University’s most respected residences with an impressive tradition of nearly a hundred years.
Although Sonop is a private male residence, which belongs to the “Bond van Oud-Sonoppers”, all the residents are Tukkie students who actively participate in all the student activities on the Campus, such as Jool, sport, culture, and social activities in terms of an agreement with the University of Pretoria.
A full-time Head of Residence, together with the House Committee manage the residence to ensure affordable and non-discriminatory accommodation to all 160 residents, with Christian values, an outstanding academic culture and a participatory and enjoyable life orientation.
The Sonop Council, which is the Board of Directors of the Sonop Company, whose members are all former Sonop residents supervises the the Head of Residence and House Committee.
