The University provides excellent and sustainable financial support packages for prospective and registered students with academic potential and clear-cut plans for the future. Bursaries and loans are awarded on the grounds of both academic achievement and financial need.
The University wants to obviate at all costs a situation in which gifted young individuals have to forgo the privilege of university education owing to their family's inability to afford the full cost of their study. Therefore, in addition to the bursaries mentioned here, information of other bursaries and loans is displayed on the bulletin boards of the various faculties, and prospective students are advised to watch the media as well for bursaries offered by external organisations.
A limited number of bursaries are available for first-year students, and it is therefore advisable for prospective students to apply for as many of the bursaries they qualify for as well as to apply for study loans. (Owing to lack of space some bursaries may not be mentioned here.) For more information on study financing, please visit the website www.up.ac.za/fao or the Client Service Centre.
Please note:
- In the case of undergraduates, the University only considers applications for financial assistance from students who are South African citizens or permanent residents of South Africa.
- Prospective students must first apply for admission to the University and an application for study financing may be submitted only after a student number has been allocated.
- Achievement bursaries for new and senior undergraduates will be awarded automatically in 2006. Persons interested in any of the other bursaries and loans should submit an application for them. The closing date is 28 November of the year preceding the commencement of studies. Applications can be submitted online at www.up.ac.za/fao or an application form can be obtained from the Client Service Centre.
- The values of bursaries advertised in the study finance brochure are subject to change and merely serve as guidelines
- UP bursaries are fully repayable should students change, fail, discontinue or terminate the study programme at any stage during the year in which the bursary has been granted.
- If students do not pass at least 50% of the subjects initially registered for during the first semester, half of the bursary amount will be cancelled. The full amount will be cancelled if the student does not write the year-end exam.
- Students previously registered at other universities must submit a complete academic record along with their application form.
- No bursary will be awarded to students following an extended / special study programme
- Bursaries or loans are allocated during the first semester. An application with outstanding documents or information will not be processed.
- The University reserves the right to amend, without prior notice, the regulations and conditions applicable to the allocation of bursaries and loans
