Luminous History

Where it all began...

Luminous was founded in January 2011 by a group of pioneer students, who decided to take the challenge head-on and start a new day house that would provide students with a place of belonging - for years to come! They saw the need for a diverse, value-driven day house that would accommodate students of all races, cultures, religions and age groups at the University of Pretoria, and unite them to tackle everyday student problems, together.

Luminous received the "go-ahead" from the University of Pretoria one day prior to the start of Orientation Week of 2011! There was much to be done in one day - design a logo, draft a mission and vision, etc. The committee put in every ounce of blood, sweat and tears in order to get everything ready in time for opening day.

The first membership stall was set up on 29 January 2011, and 25 members signed up for membership during the first 24 hours of Luminous' existence! During the following two weeks, Luminous grew to +- 80 members!

The first official house committee
was chosen by an advisory board in February 2011, and they served the house until September 2011, when a new committee was chosen.

In March 2011, Luminous received provisional day house status from the University of Pretoria.

A lot has happened for Luminous in a very short period of time! Many meetings and decisions have passed as we try to establish ourselves in the Tuks community. The hope is that Luminous will continue to change student lives for years to come, but the year 2011 - the pioneering year - will always be treasured!

To infinity and beyond...

Today Luminous is firmly established as one of the University of Pretoria's day houses. Although still a small day house - you can say 'in our infancy', Luminous is slowly but surely showing the rest of Tuks that they are a force to be reckoned with!

Luminous is in the process of developing new traditions which will be passed on from generation to generation.

This is our time to make history, this is your time to be part of the Legacy that will be left behind...
