The TuksLaw team obtained tenth place in the 19th African Human Rights Moot Court Competition which was held in Cotonou, Benin from 4 to 9 October 2010.

The African Human Rights Moot Court Competition has become the largest annual gathering of students and lecturers of law on the continent. Established in 1992, 915 teams from 127 universities, representing 47 African countries, have over the last 18 years participated in this premier event on the university and human rights calendar of the continent.

‘Criminalisation of negligent HIV transmission, polygamy, sexual conduct at initiation schools and the jurisdiction of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights’ was the topic of debate, and in particular the rights of minority groups came under the spotlight when 56 universities from across the African continent battled it out during the preliminary and final rounds of this Competition.

The overall winners of the final round were the Respondent team, comprising Universite de Coocody, Cote D'Ivoire, University of Namibia, Namibia and Rhodes University, South Africa.

Although no Lusophone university was represented in the final round, the University of Eduardo Mondlane, Mozambique, was the winner amongst the Lusophone teams based on their oral presentations and their memorials.

The TuksLaw team, coached by Daniel Keevy, managed to maintain their proud reputation as both members were placed in the Top 10 best oralists, being Jan Norval second and Octavia Pletschke eigth. The team was ultimately placed tenth overall.
