UP Campus Tours goes Green!

On the 2nd of October, the UP Campus Tours Team of 2015 conducted a Green Tour of the University of Pretoria, Hatfield Campus. The tour included an early morning guided walk including the rainwater harvesting system, the Manie van der Schijff Botanical Gardens, a selection of unique trees on campus, a brown-bag healthy breakfast and a gift in the form of indigenous plant seeds for guests to plant in their garden.

Guests were shown some of the more exotic and fascinating plant species in the botanical gardens' vast collection and the green technology initiatives currently researched and implemented by the University were showcased. One of the highlights was guest speaker Jason Sampson, Curator of the Manie van der Schijff Botanical Gardens, who explained the workings of the University's rainwater harvesting system, an impressive technological advancement in water management initiated on the Hatfield Campus. This was accompanied by well-informed commentary by the UPCT students.

The event was a great success and the UP Campus Tours 2015 Team, who are also Honours students in Heritage and Cultural Tourism, did splendid work in organising the event and conducting tours. The tour was an educational and entertaining event for all and was acclaimed by one guest as: "one of the finest tours I have been on for a long time, including a couple abroad."
