University of Pretoria Natural Hazard Centre, Africa

Established in July 2008, the University of Pretoria Natural Hazard Centre, Africa (the former Aon Benfield Natural Hazard Centre, Africa) is a multi-sponsorship collaboration between the University of Pretoria and partners from industry. The Centre’s focus is in a broad spectrum of natural hazards and risk modelling relevant to the whole continent of Africa under the directorship of Prof Andrzej Kijko. The Centre play a dual role of research and education in the field of natural hazards, and serves as a hub of information for the engineering, mining, disaster management and insurance industries. The Centre’s network of associates has extensive skills in earthquake hazard modelling, mining catastrophe, and flood and meteorological risk and can offer independent advice, opinion and analysis on all aspects of African natural perils. The years of experience and expertise residing in the person of the Director of the Centre, Professor Andrzej Kijko is  supplemented by the direct access the Centre has to, among others, the UP Departments of Insurance and Actuarial Science, Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Mining and Civil Engineering, Geology as well as Geography, Geoinformatics and Meteorology.

This year, marks the 10th anniversary of the Centre, hosting two fulltime staff members. In addition to contract research and consulting services, the Centre offers companies the opportunity to become one of its partners.
