About the HWC

                What do we do?

  • Provide free individual and group (by arrangement) consulting sessions aimed at developing and improving students’ writing ability;
  • Create a positive and professional environment that fosters encouragement to students struggling with their writing;
  • Provide workshops and presentation to students within the Faculty on themes and topics that relate directly to academic writing;
  • Help to develop in students an awareness of their strengths and weaknesses regarding their writing, and thereby encouraging the transfer of the acquired skills and abilities to their other writing assignments;
  • Work closely with lecturers in the Faculty of Humanities with a view to embedding workshops within modules/departments as well as to ensure that lecturer needs are catered for as well (in terms of what lecturers see as their students’ needs, which may differ from what students may see as a need/weakness).

What do we NOT do?

  • We do not edit students assignments;
  • We do not proofread assignments;
  • We do not mark or correct students’ writing.

What do you need to bring to the appointment? Please bring along the assignment topic and any research articles you have read. You must also bring along a copy of the text you are working on, your planning, rough notes or mind map. You should also bring along a pencil and an eraser.
How many sessions do I need to attend?
We advise that students attend at least 3 sessions – once at the planning stage (when you start your research), once at the draft stage (when your ideas start to flow) and once before the document is submitted.
Do I need to see the same consultant each time I visit the writing centre?
Yes, we advise that you see the same consultant to ensure that the person you are working with is aware of your strengths and weaknesses as a writer. This will allow for better and more constructive feedback, rather than dealing with a different consultant each time you attend a session.
