#TuksCricket: Assupol TuksCricket in Third Red Bull Campus Cricket World Finals

Posted on August 19, 2016

Assupol TuksCricket is two weeks away from competing on the global stage with hopes of becoming the best university cricket team in the world. The Red Bull Campus Cricket World Finals will be hosted in Sri Lanka from 5–11 September 2016.

Red Bull Campus Cricket, which began in 2013, is a World Cup for university teams from 8 different countries; South Africa, England, Australia, UAE, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. In 2014, South Africa participated in the competition for the first time when it was hosted in England and became world champions after beating West Indies in the final. South Africa successfully defended their title in 2015, when they beat England in the final when the tournament took place in Dehradun, India.

This year, Assupol TuksCricket will be representing South Africa for the third year running after winning the annual Varsity Cricket competition in Potchefstroom in January to qualify for the competition.

In the capable hands of Assupol TuksCricket Head Coach, Kruger van Wyk, and Assistant Coach, Chris van Noordwyk, the squad has spent the last six weeks putting in a lot of hard work into their preparation to be the best team at the tournament and to give themselves a chance to become the best university cricket team in the world.

Kruger van Wyk commented, “As a squad, we are even better prepared for the World Finals than we were for Varsity Cricket earlier this year. I believe that we have a very well-balanced squad that will be able to dominate this year’s Red Bull Campus Cricket World Finals. All the players in the preliminary squad have gone the extra mile with their preparation and training during the pre-season and I believe they will reap the rewards for this.”

Van Wyk, who has played Test Cricket for New Zealand in Sri Lanka, believes the team has done the right preparation for the conditions that they could possibly face, “The key for us will be to understand the conditions in Sri Lanka, which is different than our conditions at home and for the players to understand their roles in these conditions.”

The group draw and opening function will be hosted on Sunday 4 September and the group stages will be played from 5-7 September in Colombo. The semi-finals and final will take place in Galle on Saturday 10 September 2016 and Sunday 11 September 2016 respectively.
