Tourism Management hosts conference on sustainable tourism at Kruger National Park

Posted on July 23, 2015

The 15th Building Excellence in Sustainable Tourism Education Network (BEST EN) Conference was hosted with great success by the Faculty of Economic and Management Science’s Tourism Management Division at the Protea Hotel Kruger Gate from 17 to 21 June 2015. The conference was organised by Prof Felicite Fairer-Wessels and Drs Anneli Douglas and Elizabeth Kruger, with eight postgraduate students in eco- and tourism management assisting at the venue.

The theme was ‘The environment – people nexus in sustainable tourism – finding the balance’, with Prof Jarkko Saarinen and Dr Anna Spenceley as keynote speakers. Delegates from the USA, Great Britain, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Botswana, Ghana and Namibia delivered papers, with best and other selected papers invited to publish in the ISI-rated Journal of Sustainable Tourism.

BEST EN is an inclusive, collaborative, international network that focuses on the creation and dissemination of knowledge to support education and practice in the field of sustainable tourism. As the very first BEST EN conference was held in South Africa in 2001, it was thought fitting to host the 15th conference here again – with a game drive allowing delegates to view the Big 5. The international delegates were enthralled with South Africa and everyone committed to visiting the country again.

The 2016 conference will be hosted in Berlin from 15 to 18 July. For more information, visit http://www.besteducationnetwork.org/.
