Nervous System (GNK 482)

NERVOUS SYSTEM: GNK 482 (BLOCK 13)

Knowledge of the nervous system is indispensable to all medical practitioners, since the control of the entire body relies heavily upon it.

Discussion of the important diseases of the central, peripheral and autonomic nervous system with a view to obtaining a total overview of the specific diseases, which will include anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, clinical neurology, clinical neurosurgery and neuropaediatrics is included in the theoretical component of the course.

Bearing in mind that diagnosing neurological disease or trauma relies heavily on clinical assessment, students are trained by the Skills Lab in the basic, most essential clinical techniques in order to diagnose damage of the brain and spinal cord due to trauma, and common neurological ailments; hence the opportunity to acquire the ability to apply the Glasgow Coma Scale and other neurological assessment skills correctly, such as performing a lumbar puncture safely and effectively, by practicing this skill on a mannequin designed specifically for this goal.
