Mission and Vision

Seeking to contribute to the Faculty of Health Sciences’ vision to produce health professionals and to undertake research geared towards the advancement of health and health care, we envisage a tripartite vision:

Teaching and learning

To promote and facilitate simulation based teaching for all students within the Faculty, in a dynamic and safe teaching space, using cutting edge technology with the ultimate goals of developing interviewing skills, physical exam techniques, diagnostic reasoning, professionalism and collegiate relationships needed for the safe and effective practice of healthcare in South Africa.

Research

To promote a multidisciplinary research culture with a focus on themes that will foster synergies between disciplines and contribute to more advanced and effective educational methods in simulation training.

Service delivery

To become the educational entity and regional leader of choice in the delivery of simulation training and other external courses to medical, corporate and public organisations that lack the facility, equipment and staff of their own to do so.

As a first of its kind in Africa, the Faculty of Health Sciences’ skills laboratory enjoys national recognition.  To ensure the current success and future growth, we are committed to:

  • Maintaining a student-focussed, inquiry-based approach to teaching.
  • Maintaining and expanding on current simulation training that fully incorporate state-of-the-art training techniques and equipment.
  • Supporting inquiry-led curricula through simulation across all disciplines.
  • Contributing to the published field of research surrounding simulation based educational methodologies.
  • Supporting academics to demonstrate the validity and predictive value of simulation as a competency assessment evaluation tool.
  • Further the development of simulation training and technology through collaboration with corporate industry and other academics from non-healthcare specialities.
  • Maintaining a third stream of income through external courses.
