MasterCard Foundation Scholars Programme

Posted on March 27, 2018

The University of Pretoria entered into a partnership with The MasterCard Foundation to offer scholarships to academically talented but financially needy youth from Africa to study at the University of Pretoria from 2014 to 2023. The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program is built on the premise that all young people, no matter their starting point in life, should have the opportunity to obtain a quality education and pursue their aspirations. The goal of the Program is to develop a cohort of transformational leaders who will support social transformation and economic growth on the African continent.

From 22 to 26 January 65 new MasterCard Foundation Scholars were welcomed to the University of Pretoria, bringing the total number supported by the Foundation to 183. Students came from South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Zambia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Swaziland, Nigeria and Ghana. In 2018 the new Scholars were accepted into the Faculties of Economic and Management Sciences, Humanities and Natural and Agricultural Sciences. The Orientation included a two-day session with Common Purpose aimed at building the contextual awareness of the new Scholars and greater identification with the goals of the programme and with the University of Pretoria.

The Orientation was followed by the official launch of the new cohort at a function on 10 February at which the Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Cheryl de la Rey welcomed the students. She is pictured with the female students in the photo below.
