CRIMSA International Biennial Conference 2017
6 September 2017
As president of the Criminological and Victimological Society of Southern Africa (CRIMSA), Prof Christiaan Bezuidenhout of the Department of Social Work and Criminology at the University of Pretoria had the responsibility to host a biennial conference during his term of office. CRIMSA hosted an international biennial conference in August 2017 at the Indaba Hotel, Spa and Conference Centre, Fourways, Johannesburg, South Africa. The 2017 conference was attended by more than 100 academics, students, practitioners and professionals. In particular, 16 local and international universities were represented. The conference theme was: 'Regulating Crime and Victimisation in an Age of Mobility, Mass Movement, Migration and Governance at a Distance'. From a large number of abstracts, 70 papers were accepted to be included in the conference programme.
The plenary speakers, Prof Jimmy Albrecht from PACE University in New York ('Police deviance and corruption') and Prof William Bloss from East Carolina University ('Crime-terror nexus in Sub-Saharan Africa') presented the delegates with thought-provoking and stimulating presentations. Prof Bloss showed an interest in future collaborative efforts between the University of Pretoria and East Carolina University.
All the Criminology lecturers in the Department of Social Work and Criminology at the University of Pretoria contributed to papers that were presented at this international conference. Furthermore, three Criminology honours students of the Department attended the conference and assisted with the conference registration and general support in the breakaway sessions.
Based on the feedback received from the conference delegates, the conference was productive and successful. The Department is grateful for the open exchange of ideas, networking and lively discussions, and looks forward to hosting the next conference in two years.
