Professor Vollie Spies recognised for her contribution to Tuks Athletics Marathon Club
17 April 2017
Congratulations to Prof Vollie Spies who received recognition during a ceremony on 24 March 2017 for outstanding service to Tuks Athletics over a period of 21 years. The award was presented to her by the Vice Chancellor, Prof Cheryl de la Rey.
Prof Spies has made an exceptional contribution to Tuks Athletics and in particular to the Tuks Athletics Marathon Club; both as an athlete and as a member of the management. Her achievements as an athlete included winning the Two Oceans ultra-marathon (2013) and the Comrades marathon (2012) in her age category; while on several occasions finishing among the first three positions. In her long athletics career she also achieved provincial and national colours for long distance running. This year, Prof Spies will run her 20th Comrades marathon, which will also be the last time that she competes in this race.
Prof Spies has been a member of the management of the Club for the past 17 years; serving as chairperson for the last eight years. Through extensive networking with various companies in Pretoria, she initiated the Bestmed Tuks Race that has become an annual event. This event, of which Bestmed is the chief sponsor supported by a number of secondary sponsorships, is currently graded as one of the best organised road races in the country. Many professional athletes participated in this race over the past eight years.
Prof De la Rey presented Prof Spies with a portrait study in recognition of her dedication to her role at the Tuks Athletics Marathon Club.
