Seven UP researchers nominated for prestigious NTSF Awards

Seven researchers at the University of Pretoria (UP) have been nominated in eight categories of the 19th NSTF-South32 Awards for their outstanding contributions to science, engineering, technology and innovation in South Africa. The NSTF Awards is the flagship project of the National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF), in partnership with South32.

'Producing world-class research takes perseverance, hard work and high levels of expertise, which often requires years of commitment. We congratulate all of our nominees on their magnificent achievements,' said Prof Stephanie Burton, Vice-Principal for Research and Postgraduate Education.

Established in 1998, the awards are now the largest and most prestigious of their kind in South Africa. Winners will be announced on 29 June.

UP nominees and categories  

Prof Robert Pattinson

Chief Specialist and Clinical Head in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at UP, and Director of the Unit for Maternal and Infant Health Care Strategies at the South African Medical Research Council

Contribution over a lifetime (fifteen years or more)

 

Prof Lise Korsten

Professor of Plant Pathology in the Department of Microbiology and Plant Pathology

TW Kambule-NSTF Awards: Researchers – Contribution to research and its outputs – over a period of up to fifteen years after award of a PhD or equivalent, predominantly in South Africa

Award for research and engineering capacity development over the last 5-10 years - These awards are made to individuals based in South Africa, regardless of nationality or citizenship. The individuals must have, during the last 5 to 10 years, demonstrated outstanding leadership in increasing the participation of young researchers or engineers in their chosen SET fields

Dr Vinet Coetzee

Senior Lecturer in the Department of Genetics

Research focus: Down's syndrome diagnosis

TW Kambule-NSTF Awards: Emerging Researchers – Contribution to research and its outputs over a period of up to six years after award of a PhD or equivalent, predominantly in South Africa

Prof Mmantsae Diale

Associate Professor in the Department of Physics

Award for research and engineering capacity development over the last 5-10 years – These awards are made to individuals based in South Africa, regardless of nationality or citizenship. The individuals must have, during the last 5 to 10 years, demonstrated outstanding leadership in increasing the participation of young researchers or engineers in their chosen SET fields

Prof Nicholas (Nico) de Bruyn

Associate Professor in the Department of Zoology and Entomology at UP and Ex-situ Field Operations Manager for the Marion Island Marine Mammal Programme at the Mammal Research Institute

Research focus: Seals and whales

 

 

NSTF-GreenMatter Award to either and individual, a team or an organisation for an outstanding contribution to science, engineering, technology and/or innovation in SA towards achieving environmental sustainability and the Green Economy over the past 5-10 years - The NSTF-GreenMatter Award recognises researchers and organisations working towards achieving biodiversity conservation, environmental sustainability and a green economy.

Research for Innovation Awards. These awards are given to teams or individuals (in corporate and small or medium-sized enterprises) who have made outstanding contributions to SET through research that has led to innovation in South Africa.

The NSTF Award for Communication for Outreach and Creating Awareness of science, engineering and technology (SET) and innovation. The award recognises a communicator who has made an outstanding contribution to SET through a substantial impact in terms of public awareness of SET.

The winners will be announced at a gala dinner to be held on Thursday, 29 June 2017, in Gauteng. As Patron of the Awards, Mrs Naledi Pandor, Minister of Science and Technology, will preside over the programme.
