Message from the SHSPH executive

The School of Health Systems and Public Health – known more commonly as the SHSPH – has as its vision “inspiring public health excellence in Africa”.  This big picture of population health – or public health – finds expression in the numerous activities of the SHSPH such as teaching, research, community engagement and consultation.  The SHSPH is a postgraduate school that has loosely grouped itself to mirror the five commonly described specialties of public health.  The teams who work in these five areas all contribute to the incremental realisation of our vision.  The five areas are: epidemiology and biostatistics; disease control; health policy and management; health promotion; and environmental and occupational health.

Our academic programmes range from meeting educational industry requirements (for example the postgraduate diploma in occupational medicine and health that medical practitioners need in order to practice in occupational-related services) to doctoral studies.  This wide range is supported by the substantial in-house academic expertise and on-site facilities such as our air quality and water quality laboratories.  The SHSPH also participates in the undergraduate medical curriculum by contributing to the teaching of public health in that curriculum.

The SHSPH hosts the Environmental Chemical Pollution and Health (ECPH) Research Unit, which conducts research on the occurrence, health effects and projected future impacts of chemicals, especially EDCs, on environmental pollution and health.  The UP Centre for Sustainable Malaria Control (CSMC) is also hosted in the SHSPH.  The UP CSMC  pioneers research on sustainable malaria control methods from the biochemical and the biological to the chemical and the physical – including how best to manage these methods at a trans-disciplinary level.

The SHSPH has an array of local and international extra-ordinary academic staff that support the efforts of our fulltime academic staff and ensure both a local and global relevance in our programmes.  Finally the SHSPH and its students are ably supported by a dedicated team of administrative support members.  This academic and administrative team would like to extend a word of welcome and an invitation to visit both our webpages and our Facebook page.
