Research Interest:

Professor Feresu is an epidemiologist, with master’s level Biostatistics training, who has spent more than 20 years in the USA. Her research interests include etiologic studies in perinatal/paediatric/reproductive epidemiology, on issues related to birth out comes including prematurity, low birthweight, stillbirths and infant mortality. Also, issues related to women health in pregnancy and the risk of poor birth outcomes, such as obesity, HIV infection, maternal pregnancy complications and maternal mortality.

Her second interest is in epidemiologic research for cancer and sexually transmitted infections, cervical and breast cancer screening, and etiologic research for chronic disease particularly in cardiovascular disease and diabetes screening.

Her other interests are on HIV/AIDS research including etiologic research, HIV interventions, HIV infection or antiretroviral therapy and their relationship to birth outcomes. Other infectious diseases such as sexually transmitted infections, malaria epidemiology and relationships to birth outcomes. Other studies are related to alcohol and substance abuse and mental health, and behavioural modifications.

Currently she is working on a project examining maternal obesity and its relationship to birth outcomes, using Indiana (USA) Vital statistics data, College age alcohol use in Indiana, USA. She is also re-examining the HIV survey data from HSRC, and also looking at the relationship between cervical cancer, and HIV/HPV co-infection in South Africa
