#TuksRugby: Delta Drone TuksRugby7’s women's team wins third USSA-title

Posted on April 23, 2018

There is no stopping the Delta Drone TuksRugby7’s. On Saturday they completed their hat-trick by winning the USSA Tournament played at Wits.

It is the third time in five years that they won the tournament. They were also victorious in 2015 and 2016. Last year Tuks did not compete due to international commitments.

To say that Tuks dominated won’t be an exaggeration. In the six games played they scored 264 points and only conceded 19 points. They won three games without conceding a single try.

Delta Drone TuksRugby7’s won the final beating Fort Hare University 33-7. Libbie Janse van Rensburg (captain) was the player of the tournament.

The Delta Drone TuksRugby7’s Invitational Team won all three their games.

As usual, Van Rensburg refuse to take credit for her team’s performance reiterating that she can only be as good as her teammates allow her to be.

“Sevens is a team sport. Any team is only as good as its weakest player. What excited me on Saturday was how the players all were able to lift their game. I can honestly say that we improved with each game we played. That is amazing considering that it was the first time ten of our players get to play the USSA Tournament. Only Kemi Baloyi and I played the previous time."

Van Rensburg was especially impressed with how Liske Lategan and Cinanda Potgieter played.

Riaan van der Merwe (coach) was impressed about Baloyi’s performance.

“She was fearless on the defence, making one tackle after another. Shania-Lee Swart also impressed me. It was hard to believe that it was only the first time that she is playing a tournament for Tuks. She played like a seasoned campaigner. Often changing the direction of play and opening gaps in the other team’s defence.”

Being the perfectionist, she is Van Rensburg said that there is no time for them to rest on their laurels.

“Even though we performed well, I got to be realistic the standard of our play was not good enough for international tournaments. We need to work on our play on defence. When playing internationally, you cannot afford to miss any tackles. We also got to focus on getting fitter. I am a firm believer that you can never be fit enough to play rugby.”

Delta Drone TuksRugby7’s will be playing the Stanislas 7’s (19-20 May) and the Centrale 7’s (22-23 May) in France before going on to play the  Benidorm 7’s (26-27 May) in Spain.
