#TuksRugby women’s 7s team impresses at Loftus

Posted on April 03, 2018

The Deltadrone TuksRugby7's women's achieved another first on Saturday when they got to play the main curtain raiser for the Bulls at Loftus.

The team did not disappoint. The Tuks team managed to beat the Soweto Eagles 42-0 increasing their unbeaten streak in local games.

Libbie Janse van Rensburg (captain) starred for the winning team scoring two tries as well as succeeding with six conversions. The other try scorers were Kemi Baloyi (2), Loli Hlabangane and Xandrea Breitenbach.

The score does not tell the full story. Janse van Rensburg admits that she and her teammates got a good case of the jitters when they ran onto the “holy" grass of Loftus.

“It is really intimidating when you stand in the middle of the field and look up to the stands realizing that on a good day there can be 50 000 spectators. It made us feel insignificant.

"At first, we made far too many handling errors. I had to remind my teammates that we are capable of a better performance. What helped us to relax was that the spectators showed their appreciation every time we executed a brilliant move that led to a try being scored.”

A personal highlight for Van Rensburg was succeeding with all the conversions.

“It was always my dream to have a 100% success rate when kicking at goal at Loftus. To do so is something I will remember for a long time to come.”

She admits that a lot of hard work awaits her and her teammates before the team leaves for Europe next month to play three tournaments.

“If we play as we did at Loftus we are going to be in for a hiding. I am confident that we will improve. We got a lot of new players who are still learning the finer skills of the game.”
