Springbok Sevens coach keeps a close eye on Varsity 7s

Posted on April 29, 2016

While the boys from Kovsies are looking to retain the coveted Varsity 7s title, the race to the number one spot won’t be plain sailing, with UJ sporting a strong squad and Maties looking to regain the title they have won twice before.

The weekend will be jam-packed with entertainment for everyone, including the Steers Chill Zone, giveaways by FNB, Cell C, Samsung and Legit, free beer and an appearance by the Springbok Sevens.

Springbok Sevens coach, Neil Powell, is in support of the Varsity 7s tournament, stating that it is a great asset to sevens rugby in South Africa. A number of the Springbok Sevens players will be in attendance, as well as Powell.

“Varsity 7s is a fantastic tournament,” said Powell. “It’s a breeding ground for future talent, so it’s a competition that we keep a close eye on.

“The Springbok Sevens’ focus is firmly on the Olympics this year, but a number of the players in our squad will move on after that and with the future in mind, Varsity 7s allows us a window of opportunity to see our country’s future talent.”

Join the Blitzboks and get down to Villager Rugby Club to catch the Varsity 7s action from Saturday 30 April to Monday 2 May.
