PLAYOFFS The national university football team put their hands up and delivered on Tuesday, as Dennis Kaibe spearheaded a spectacular performance to book their place in the men's quarter-finals at the World Student Games in Gwangju, South Korea.

Kaibe netted a hat-trick, handing the South Africans a 3-0 win over Mexico in their last Group D match, as they ended the first round of the tournament with two victories and one defeat.

They will face Brazil in the quarter-finals on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the SA rowing team put up another strong fight, and while they ended their three-day campaign without a medal, a trio of athletes powered their way into B finals.

James Brittain took second place in the men's lightweight singles B final in 7:22.08, less than three seconds behind Petr Cabla of the Czech Republic, while Nicole van Wyk finished fourth in the women's lightweight singles B final in 8:07.01 and Kate Christowitz ended fifth in the women's singles B final in 7:59.88.

In the swimming pool, Franko Jonker and Doug Erasmus progressed beyond the morning heats but were eliminated in the penultimate round of their events in the evening session.

Jonker finished 12th overall in the women's 200m breaststroke semifinals in 2:29.52 and Erasmus was 16th in the 100m freestyle semifinals, setting his second personal best of the day when he touched the wall in 50.44.
