Martha Bradley, a doctoral student affiliated with the SARChI Professorship in International Constitutional Law was one of only four recipients of the prestigious Hague Academy of International Law Doctoral Scholarships for 2017. Martha Bradley is an LLD candidate and non-resident SARChI associate at the Institute for International and Comparative Law in Africa in the Faculty of Law at the University of Pretoria. Her doctoral thesis is entitled ‘An analysis of the notions of “organised armed groups” and “intensity” in the law of non-international armed conflict’. She is supervised by Prof Erika de Wet (University of Pretoria) and Prof Jann Kleffner (Swedish Defence University).

The Hague Academy of International Law Doctoral Scholarship Programme runs parallel with its annual Summer courses on Public International Law and Private International Law. Doctoral students entering the final year of their doctoral studies in the domain of public or private international law from all non-OECD countries are invited to apply for this scholarship. Every year the scholarship allows four doctoral students to travel to The Hague, ‘the city of international peace and justice’, and conduct a two month research stay with full access to the Peace Palace Library which is home to one of the most extensive public international law collections in the world. The scholarship also allows the recipients to attend the renowned Summer courses of the Hague Academy of International Law in either public or private international law.

The 2017 recipients were Ms Nan Nan (People’s Republic of China), Mr Alassane Seydou Toure (Mali); Ms Martha Bradley (South Africa) and Mr Noel Gautier Gueazang Nguepi (Camaroon). Martha Bradley was the only South African recipient of this award and also the only South African attendee of this year’s Summer courses of the Hague Academy of International Law.
