Posted on November 28, 2016

The Faculty of Law at the University of Pretoria is proud to announce that, following a competitive round, the University of Pretoria (in particular TuksLaw) has been selected as the sole South African University to be represented on the African Mining Legislation Atlas (AMLA) Project Implementing Consortium (PIC).

The AMLA Project is an initiative by the Legal Vice Presidency of the World Bank. It is being implemented in collaboration with the African Legal Support Facility (ALSF), and the African Union Commission (AUC), with the aim of supporting African countries in maximising mineral resource benefits. Accordingly, the Project objectives include the promotion of transparency, accessibility and comparison of Africa’s mining laws; facilitation for the preparation, revision and implementation of mining laws; providing a living database to catalyse research and policy debates on legal and regulatory issues; and to promote the development of local legal expertise on African mining laws.

Moreover, two students of the 2016 class from the Master's degree in Extractive Industry Law in Africa have also been selected to participate in the annual AMLA Workshop which will be hosted by the University of Ghana in December 2016.   The TuksLaw programme director of the Master's degree, Adv Leon Gerber, will simultaneously represent the University of Pretoria at the first PIC meeting in Ghana to participate in the Project sustainability strategy discussions and to contribute to the finalisation and adoption of a Five-Year Plan for the Project.
