About Public Health Medicine

INTRODUCTION

The programme has been designed to prepare graduates to be leaders in the field of public health and provide them with the skills and knowledge to identify and address local, national, regional and international public health issues.

The programme reflects the values of Public Health Medicine: social justice, equity, human rights and responsiveness to the needs of the people in South Africa and in Africa.

Public Health Medicine is multi-disciplinary with staff from a number of disciplines involved in the teaching and research components.

To be the most successful Clinical Public Health Medicine Department in South Africa through staff development, performance and quality through out

To become an internationally recognised centre of excellence for Public Health and Preventive Medicine through provision of Preventive Promotive care

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Public Health graduates may work in:

  • Senior mangerial positions in national, provincial or local government;
  • Public hospitals, clinics or community health centres;
  • Non-governmental organisations working in public health;
  • Universities;
  • Research institutions;
  • International agencies such as WHO, CDC or other United Nations agencies.
