Ukuthwala in the Eastern Cape, Interview with Dr Amanda van der Westhuizen

Posted on August 24, 2015

Ukuthwala, particularly in the Eastern Cape, increasingly involves the kidnapping, rape and forced marriage of minor girls as young as 12 years, by old men, enough to be their grandfathers. A United Nations research conducted with young girls who have been victims of the practice of Ukuthwala, revealed numerous health complications for the girls. To speak to us more about the practice and it's psychological impact on a girl child, we are joined by Psychologist with the Nelson Mandela Bay Justice Coalition, Amanda van der Westhuizen from the SABC studios Port Elizabeth Studio.
