The University of Pretoria (UP) is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Birgit Kuschke as Deputy Dean: Teaching and Learning in the Faculty of Law with effect 1 July 2018.

Profr Kuschke completed the degrees BLC cum laude and LLB cum laude at the University of Pretoria and an LLD degree at the University of South Africa. She completed her articles at VDT Attorneys in Pretoria and was admitted as an Attorney, Notary and Conveyancer of the High Court of South Africa in 1994. Currently she is an associate professor in the Department of Private Law in the Faculty of Law and has lectured extensively in undergraduate and postgraduate modules in the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Business and Management Sciences and EBIT.

Profr Kuschke is a principal member of the project on the Drafting of Universal Principles of Reinsurance Contract Law (PRICL) and a corresponding member of the project on Principles of European Insurance contract law (PEICL). She is also a member of the Society of Law Teachers of South Africa and an accredited Poslec SETA legal education and training practitioner. She has been involved in various research projects relating to the insurance risks, insurance regulation and practice and has contributed to a number of academic books and various textbooks.

Prof Kuschke currently serves as a councillor on the Presidential Council of the International Association for Insurance Law and is a member of two of the Association’s working groups.

Professor Cheryl de la Rey, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Pretoria 'congratulated Professor Kuschke on her appointment and wished her well in her career as Deputy Dean: Teaching and Learning in the Faculty of Law.' Dean André Boraine welcomed Prof Kuschke, stating that he 'was looking forward to establish a good working relationship with Prof Kuschke to take our faculty forward.'  He also expressed his sincere gratitude towards the outgoing deputy dean, Prof Anton Kok, 'for a decade of most loyal and exemplary service rendered to the Faculty of Law - a huge thank you for your support and inputs over the years!'
