The scholarships are funded by the Andrew W Mellon Foundation. We are looking for students who want to join a vibrant group of scholars and students, and who are interested in either discipline-based, or interdisciplinary and/or comparative topics.

The value of the scholarships is:

MA (R95 000, maximum two years) 

PhD (R120 000, maximum three years)

postdoctoral (R190 000, maximum two years).

Applicants must identify one of the following areas where scholarship funding is available:

• The human face and cost of inequalities

• The public intellectual in contemporary society

• Art and the imagination

• Decolonisation of the humanities curriculum

Candidates for an MA should have an honours degree mark of 70% and above in an appropriate discipline in the humanities. Candidates for the PhD should ideally have an upper second to first class pass for their MA.
