Responding to xenophobia: What can South Africa learn from Côte d’Ivoire? – a policy brief by Ella Jeannine A. Abatan

 

This policy brief is a response to the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa. While xenophobia is not merely a South African problem, the recent violence against fellow black Africans raises many questions regarding the government choice of responses and the effectiveness of those responses. What is puzzling, as Adam and Moodly rightly remark, is that “a society which, at the very least freed itself from institutionalised racism, now practices new forms of black-on-black racialization”.
