Computer Laboratory Facilities

Undergraduate computer lab

The undergraduate computer lab can accommodate 40 students on intel I5 and I7 computers, and is used in both the second and thrid year courses for computational physics and modelling courses as well as instrumentation practicals. A wide range of software running on both Linux and Windows environments are available. Software includes Maple, SigmaPlot, LabVIEW and Easy Java Simulations.

When not in use by students, the computers are linked by a 1Gb network in which they function as a cluster and are used for electronic structure calculations.

Electronic structure computing laboratory

This facility is for post graduate students performing electronic structure calculations. Currently a range of PC's as well as the ad-hoc undergraduate cluster as well as some blades on an IBM BladeCenter are available for computations. Future expansion to include more high performance computing is being planned.

Currently VASP (as part of the MedeA package by Materials Design), Quantum ESPRESSO, GAUSSIAN and other packages are available.
