Master's in Physics

Prerequisites

BSc (Hons) in Physics (or equivalent qualification) and with permission by the Head of Department (HOD).

Course structure

This degree is awarded on the basis of a research dissertation performed under the supervision of at least one academic staff member of the Department of Physics.

The Head of the Department (HOD) and supervisor may also require a student to take some courses to provide additional background knowledge to the student, before or during the research project.

Students will be required to present a seminar that is open to the public on completion of their dissertation and also defend their dissertation in an oral examination.

The research project, completion of the dissertation and delivery of the seminar should be finished over a two year period.
 

Research project

Students will have to identify a suitable supervisor and agree upon a research project.

International students

Information regarding the registration requirements, process, and study fees for international students (not RSA citizens) can be found at this link.

International students will have to secure their own funding, before they can register for a postgraduate degree. Students will have to budget for at about R80 000 (US$ 10 000) per year for living expenses.

Admission dates

Students can apply at any time during the year for admission. The new academic year for students starts every year in January, but students will be allowed to register at a later stage throughout the year as well.
