Message from the Head of the Department

Message from the HOD 2019

2018 was an interesting year for us in Paediatrics. We started the year with a moratorium on post filling, which included replacement of Registrars, but luckily that limitation was lifted after some careful negotiations. We lost one of our senior posts but all in all we did just fine. Thank you to all my team for making the care of patients, as well as our academic offering a reality.

Paediatrics is a flag-ship department in both the Steve Biko Academic Hospital as wel as the School of Medicine. I hear often from administration that in ‘Paeds the job gets done and done well.’

Our post-graduate programme hit a wobbly this year with some poor performances in the FC Paed part 2 but we have a plan to correct that. We still shone in our MMed degree programme. We had significant passes in our Diploma exams. Our under-graduate teaching programme is progressing well and our SIC programme secretary, Gladys managed to obtain her PhD whilst giving our students amazing care. Congratulations Gladys, you made us proud!

Our Fellowship programme saw Dr Derisha Pillay and Dr Harishia Naidoo pass the Certificate in Neonatology, Dr Lesley Hendricks pass the Certificate in Paediatric Gastroenterology, Dr Daina Rudrezo pass the Certificate in Paediatric Nephrology.

Dr Errol Gottlich was promoted to Honorary Professor in our Department for the amazing work he does with children with renal diseases. The picture below is of his dialysis facility.

Dr Jeane Cloete was promoted to Adjunct Professor. Nice going Jeane.

At the date of writing this report our department has had 22 Publications credited.

Our UPDate this year saw us celebrate 10 years of providing continuing medical education to our colleagues in private practice and our new home was a great success. May I invite you to join us again in 2019.

A big thank you to our team for making ‘Paeds Great Again’!
