Humanities postgraduate conference

Posted on November 02, 2017

The Faculty of Humanities recently hosted their annual postgraduate conference, and has extended its programme to include honours students. The conference allows students to share their research on a multi-disciplinary platform to peers and established academics within the Faculty. This gives young researchers an opportunity to build research networks and create learning communities and opportunities.

The conference helps postgraduate students to gain practical public presentation experience, and, through lively debate and exchanging of ideas, it is hoped that their research will make a contribution to the body of knowledge that improves the human condition through service to society.

The conference focused on broad themes of:

  • gender, sexualities and society;
  • history, heritage and tourism;
  • social experiences and lived realities;
  • security and governance;
  • health and society;
  • education and society; and
  • text and theory.

Prof Maxi Schoeman, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, opened the proceedings and welcomed students and staff to the conference. Prof Leonhard Praeg, Head of the Department of Philosophy, presented the keynote address in which he interrogated the demand for decolonised curricula against the backdrop of the history of the modern (post)colonial university, the forces of globalisation and other issues raised by the student revolt of 2015–16.
