#ChooseUP Open Day

Posted on May 24, 2017

On Saturday, 20 May 2017, the University of Pretoria (UP) held its annual Open Day for Grade 9 to 12 high school learners and their families. This event is the ideal opportunity for learners and their parents or guardians to explore the wide range of study options available at the University.

As part of the programme, prospective students and their parents had the opportunity to attend an address by Prof Cheryl de la Rey, Vice Chancellor and Principal of the University. Prof Tinyiko Maluleke, Special Advisor to the Vice Chancellor, welcomed the guests at two well-attended sessions, after which he introduced a troupe from UP's Drama Department who gave a delightful performance. Commenting on the performance, Prof Maluleke said: 'Elegance describes the experience of being at the University of Pretoria. The ease and beauty with which the performers moved was a demonstration of how our graduates move in the world.' Following this, Prof Maluleke introduced Prof De la Rey, to share a special message with those present.

She asked two important questions: 'Is the University of Pretoria going to be the right choice in these unsettled times in South Africa?' and 'Should you consider this University?' Her answer was simple, frank and honest. 'I believe that you should choose the University of Pretoria for the one simple reason that academic excellence is our top priority.'

In her closing remarks, Prof de la Rey specifically addressed parents and guardians who are concerned about their children's choice of academic programmes. 'Please bear in mind that it is very difficult for seventeen-year-olds to decide whether they should pursue engineering, IT, psychology, accounting, biology, or any of the numerous other possibilities,' she said. She encouraged parents not to be alarmed if they thought their children were not making the right choice from the onset, as they would be given an opportunity to change their subjects should they wish to do so. What is important though, she reminded them, is that prospective students should ensure that their applications are submitted on time and that they register.
