International Women's Day 2017

Posted on March 08, 2017

8 March marks International Women's Day. The day is dedicated to raising awareness among men and women in business, governments and society that women are still consciously or unconsciously discriminated against in many spheres of work and life.

Even though women have played a defining role through multiple platforms and used their voices individually and collectively for change as early as the Suffragettes movement  for voting rights for women, and in South Africa the 1956 South African march to the Union Buildings by 20 000 women of all races, classes and backgrounds in protest against the injustices of the apartheid system, the struggles for gender equality continue in both developed and emerging markets. As women are half the world's population, much has been written and said about the economic imperative for gender equality but far less has been researched and written about the justice based rights of women to have equal access to education, jobs, and leadership roles in business and government.

The United Nations Women initiatives invite both men and women to continue to support the call for gender equality at the macro, meso and micro levels.
