Minister's announcement regarding 2017 tuition fee increase

Posted on September 19, 2016

The University of Pretoria (UP) takes note of the announcement of the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Blade Nzimande, regarding the increase in tuition fees for the 2017 academic year. The UP will study the document and detail to determine the full implications of the decision.

An important part of the announcement is that the government will pay for the fee adjustments of all financially needy students or children of all poor, working and middle class families – those with a household income of up to R600 000 per annum. This means that all NSFAS qualifying students, as well as the so-called "missing middle" – that is for students whose families earn up to R600 000 per year – there will be no fee increase in 2017.

The University will engage all its stakeholders, including students and their parents, on how to take this forward. We remain committed to finding solutions to make education accessible to poor students at the UP.
