Message from the Vice Chancellor: Freedom Day and Workers' Day

Posted on April 27, 2016

This month we celebrate Freedom Day when we remember the sacrifices made so that on 27 April 1994, millions of South Africans were able to peacefully cast their votes for the first time. Freedom Day reminds us that South Africa is a country built on the foundations of human rights and social justice. These rights and freedoms are entrenched in the constitution, reminding us that we live in a constitutional democracy.

As a country we recognize that poverty, inequality and unemployment prevents many South Africans from the full attainment of freedom. Through its research, teaching and learning, the University of Pretoria continues to make its own contribution in the struggle against poverty, inequality and unemployment.

This week as we commemorate Freedom Day and Workers Day, let us together reflect deeply on the sacrifices of those who have made it possible for us to celebrate these days.  As a university, we wish to express our appreciation for all workers who make a contribution to the daily functioning of our institution. Let us use this time to consider how each and every one of us can make our own contribution to making freedom a reality for all South Africans.
