Posted on September 04, 2015

On Thursday, 27 August 2015, Prof Cheryl de la Rey, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Pretoria (UP) paid a visit to the Driveway team in celebration of Women's Month.

Driveway presenter, Refiloe Matsela and Zeenat Patel, Driveway newsreader, discussed the topic of women and leadership with Prof De la Rey. They also spoke about her message at the UP’s Women of Worth event – women occupying leadership roles in South Africa, gender equality in the private sector and the transformation of female enrolment at UP.

Prof De la Rey shared the challenges faced by women when she was a student in the 1980s. She mentioned that it is worth celebrating the fact that the majority of current UP students are women. In addition, more and more women are enrolled for courses in areas that used to be male-dominated.

She emphasised the importance of unity among women and said, ‘It is important for women to support one another, particularly when we are subject to the levels of abuse that we see in our society.’

Refiloe Matsela said it was great to have the studio full of women. ‘Prof De la Rey is strong and inspiring – the perfect guest to wrap up Women's Month.’
