Varsity football: UP-Tuks beat VUT 2–0

Posted on August 31, 2015

Tebogo Galane rounded off the scoring as the University Of Pretoria beat the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) 2–0 at the Tuks Stadium on Monday, 31 August.

The win means Tuks keep the second spot on the log and it will take a 6–0 win for the Tshwane University of Technology to usurp that position from the defending champions. It is the third consecutive semi-final for Tuks and they have gone on to win the competition twice.

VUT started off on a high as Rudzani Nematandani made the first shot for his team but it was saved by Dylan Patterson. Claudio De Almeida opened the scoring for UP-Tuks as he latched onto a pin-point cross from Lindsay Stowman and tapped the ball into the net.

VUT started to play with more impetus and controlled the midfield as they passed the ball around swiftly, but the resilient Tuks defence restricted them to long range shots. Jeremiah Nkwana had a chance to further his team’s lead but his curling shot was saved by Eddie Kwalane.

VUT continued to dominate possession but conceded for the second time as Tebogo Galane reacted to a long diagonal pass from Phuthego Mabitsela to flick the ball over an on-rushing Eddie Kwalane and make it 2–0 for Tuks. VUT started the second half better than Tuks as Neo Mametela’s free kick sailed agonisingly wide.

VUT continued to dominate possession and get into good positions but the UP-Tuks defence held firm to see the match through and register their fourth win of the tournament to qualify for the semi-finals.
