“Melodiously uplifting winds”

Museums and Arts Management Presents UP Symphonic Winds.

The University of Pretoria Wind Band, known as the Symphonic Winds, was formed in 2012 to take the place of the esteemed Concert Ensemble.

Internationally renowned conductor Gerben Grooten leads The Symphonic Winds.  He was born in the Netherlands and studied at the Rotterdam Conservatory where he obtained a Master’s degree in symphony orchestra and choral conducting.

The Symphonic Winds has been growing at an exhilarating pace since its reformation and has been very well received since.

The Symphonic Winds has broken the typical mould for concerts and is fast becoming well known for its stylish and upbeat outdoor concerts and evening soirees. In its short existence, it has already played a lunchtime concert outside the Old Arts building and taken part in the Diamond Jubilee for the Guide Dogs Association of South Africa, featuring their celebrated version of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with Wessel van Wyk at the piano.  The band was also invited to perform at the Department of Sport and Recreation’s 2014 Indigenous Games held at the Tshwane Events Centre.
