Another record win

UP-Tuks 1’s inch-by-inch approach to the 2015 FNB Varsity Cup gathered momentum on Monday with a record 68-8 win against minnows CUT.

This was UP-Tuks 1’s highest score ever in the eight years of Varsity Cup rugby and also their biggest win to date.

“It was always a given that we would beat them; the only question … was by what margin. We were in charge from start to finish, but lacked precision and clinical execution in the last 20 minutes when the game became quite unstructured. We will take from this win what is necessary for the build-up to our penultimate match against UJ in the group phase in Johannesburg on 16 March. After their unexpected defeat against Maties, UJ will be out to make a statement [in their match] against us. This fixture can well be a decider for a place in the play-offs. We will have to be at our very best if we want to beat them,” commented Pote Human, UP-Tuks coach.

With its win against CUT, UP-Tuks returned to the number one spot on the log. They and Shimlas, the only other unbeaten side in the competition, both have 20 points after five matches, but UP-Tuks have a better points difference.

The Tuks Young Guns was another team that impressed in one of the curtain raisers on Monday, obliterating their UJ counterparts with a score of 53-16.
