UP Professor awarded UNESCO-UNU Chair

He succeeds Prof Bob Deacon of the University of Sheffield (UK) and will hold the Chair at the University of Pretoria for at least the next three years. This appointment will make it possible for the Department and the Centre for the Study of Governance Innovation (GovInn), which are both part of the Faculty of Humanities, to continue playing a leading role in the field of regionalism from grassroots level, the social dimensions of regional governance and the role of civil society in pursuing alternative forms of regional integration. 

Prof Fioramonti holds a PhD in comparative and European politics and has published more than 40 scientific articles on the European Union’s governance and foreign policy, African governance, development policies and social progress indicators in international journals such as Development in PracticeDevelopment Dialogue, European Foreign Affairs ReviewThird World QuarterlyThe Journal of Civil Society, The International SpectatorAfrican and Asian Studies.

His most recent books are How Numbers Rule the World: The Use and Abuse of Statistics in Global Politics (Zed Books 2014) and Gross Domestic Problem: The Politics Behind the World’s Most Powerful Number (Zed Books 2013), which deal with the political interests behind economic statistics and market governance.

From 2009 to 2012, Prof Fioramonti was involved in two EU-funded FP7 projects namely: "Mercury: Multilateralism and the EU in the Contemporary Global Order" and "EU-GRASP Changing Multilateralism: the EU as a Global-Regional Actor in Security and Peace".

In 2012, Prof Fioramonti received the UP Exceptional Young Researcher Award. He also holds the Jean Monnet Chair in Regional Integration and Governance Studies.
