Museums Conservation Laboratory

The Museum Conservation Laboratory works within the Museum Unit of the Department of UP Arts conserving the art and heritage collections of the University of Pretoria. The laboratory's mission is to serve the University by advancing the understanding of the science of objects conservation, conducting objects-based conservation research, as well as providing a practical conservation training ground for students. The conservation laboratory performs specialised preventive and interventive conservation (remedial) treatments, including a wide range of conservation services on  various materials such as low-fired ceramics, porcelain, glazed and unglazed wares, tin-glazed wares, stone, bone, ivory, glass, metals and plaster. Preventive museum conservation practices such as the conservation of storage and displays are also managed by the laboratory. The Museum Objects Conservation Laboratory actively supports and contributes to the University of Pretoria museum collections to ensure the collections overall preservation and protection.
