UP post-doctoral fellow wins first prize for poster presentation at UNITECR2015
7 October 2015
Dr Shengqiang Song and Prof Andrie Garbers-Craig from the University of Pretoria’s Department of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering won the first prize for the best poster presentation at the 14th Unified International Technical Conference on Refractories (UNITECR2015), which was held from 16 – 18 September in Vienna, Austria. Over 900 delegates from 47 countries attended this conference.
Dr Song is a post-doctoral fellow within the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering. He currently studies Cr(VI) formation, and the immobilisation thereof, in refractory castables. This research project was done in collaboration with Kerneos Aluminate Technologies Co Ltd, which is an international company headquartered in France. The poster, entitled ‘Equilibrium phase relations in the Al2O3-CaO-Cr2O3 system in air’, was based on part of Dr Song’s research.
Dr Song’s research forms part of a larger research drive within the Department’s Centre for Pyrometallurgy to study Cr(VI) formation in the pyrometallurgical and refractory materials industries. Cr(VI) is widely known to be a carcinogen that can easily contaminate soil and groundwater due to its high solubility and mobility in water. The minimisation of Cr(VI) formation and the safe disposal of any Cr(VI) waste products are therefore of great importance.
