Marketing PhD students network with international scholars at EMCB conference

Three PhD students (also staff members) from the University of Pretoria's Department of Marketing Management attended the Annual Conference of the Emerging Markets Conference Board (EMCB) and Doctoral Consortium, hosted by Wits Business School from 4 to 7 April 2018. The conference and doctoral consortium provided  Mrs Jade Verbeek, Mr Thinkwell Ndhlovu and Ms Danita Potgieter with an opportunity to establish networks with international experts in the broad field of marketing.
 
The purpose of the 2018 EMCB conference was to bring together interested individuals to identify common goals and interesting research questions. Attendees of the conference were able to share insights and findings from research on marketing in emerging economies and explore collaboration opportunities with the goal of shaping the agenda for research on marketing in emerging markets.
 
The doctoral consortium kicked off with a speed-dating session, where PhD students had two minutes to share their research ideas with the top professors in the field and get some valuable feedback. Prof Ray Taylor, editor of the International Journal of Advertising and media ‘go-to person’ for the Super Bowl in America, provided students with great insights and motivation for the journey ahead. Prof Ruth Bolton from W.P. Carey School of Business at the Arizona State University and board member of various prestigious marketing journals, enlightened students with practical tips and skills to complete their studies.

  • Prof Jan-Benedict Steenkamp (Associate Editor: Journal of Marketing Research, incoming Associate Editor: Journal of Marketing, ERB member Marketing Science, former Editor: International Journal of Research in Marketing).
  • Prof Ruth Bolton (former Editor: Journal of Marketing, Board member: Journal of Service Research, Journal of Business Research, Journal of Retailing, Academy of Marketing Science Review).
  • Prof Ray Taylor (Editor: International Journal of Advertising, Board member: Journal of Advertising, Journal of Public Policy and Marketing, Journal of Advertising, Psychology and Marketing, and Journal of Business Research, among others).
  • Prof Cliff Shultz (former Editor and Associate Editor: Journal of Macromarketing, Journal of Public Policy & Marketing).
  • Prof Steve Burgess (Representing Journal of African Business, Board member: International Journal of Advertising, Journal of Macromarketing).
To commemorate the conference, Wits Business School hosted an informal gala evening on Friday, 6 April 2018, with entertainment from an African drumming and dance team. The international visitors joined in to experience South African music and rhythm. The feedback from the staff was that the conference and doctoral consortium was very insightful, and it was a privilege to network with such influential and leading marketing scholars.
