Marketing Management honours students fly higher

The Department of Marketing Management welcomed the BComHons (Marketing Management) group of 2018 on 5 February 2018 with the theme ‘fly higher’. The students were asked to dress for the occasion, and they did not disappoint.

Dressed as pilots, air hosts and hostesses, flight passengers, Superman and even Tinkerbell, the students showcased a lot of creativity and enthusiasm. They embraced their first challenge and already proved to be a group with great potential. As the students arrived in class, each one received one part of a DIY aeroplane. Students were then asked to build a complete aeroplane finding the missing parts from other students. In this way, groups were formed based on the task at hand and it gave the students an opportunity to meet and interact with fellow students.

Students were welcomed by the ‘captain of the plane’, Prof Yolanda Jordaan, the Head of the Department, and were supplied with several ‘safety tips’ to survive the ‘flight’. Students introduced themselves to their fellow ‘passengers’ by sharing an aviation motivation quote and met the team of ‘pilots and co-pilots’ (lectures) for 2018 as they shared important information about their modules.

The first group challenge was to create a unique ice cream, give it a name and then sell it to the judges. The Department supplied ice-cream and cups, and the students had to use the favourite ice-cream toppings they had to bring to class. Using their supplied ice-cream with their own ice-cream toppings, many thought out of the box to design their respective ice-creams. Some of the ice-cream names were ‘Choc-stronomy,’ ‘Sheep thrills’ and ‘Biscuit Bomb’. If this was a taste of what is to come, the Department is looking forward to the journey with the honours class of 2018.

The students were left with a quote by Erin Hanson: "What if I fall? Oh but my darling, what if you fly?”.  Inspired to fly higher and further than ever before, this year will sure be one to remember.

The ‘fly higher’-theme also links with one of the University of Pretoria’s initiatives, FLY@UP. This initiative was put in place to inspire students to take responsibility and motivate them to complete their degrees and graduate on time.
