The JuniorTukkie Office of the Client Service Centre at the University of Pretoria (UP) held its Grade 11 Top Achievers Function on Thursday, 21 May and Friday, 22 May 2015 at the University’s Hatfield Campus. The top 10 academic achievers and LO teachers of the University’s feeder schools and JuniorTukkies were invited to attend the Function. The top feeder schools are selected on the basis of the students they have produced to UP over the past 5 years.

The University offers an extensive range of outstanding academic programmes and this Function is aimed at providing talented young learners with essential information to support them in shaping their future and to guide them in the process of making study and career choices. Learners were also given the opportunity to experience and enjoy the lively atmosphere of Tuks student-life.

Our guests were given the opportunity to learn more about the University's Faculties of Natural and Agricultural Sciences, Education, Humanities, Veterinary Science, Economic and Management Sciences, Law, Health Sciences and Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology.  Staff in these faculties and various support departments from the University of Pretoria were available to answer learners' questions and provide advice covering a variety of aspects applicable to learners who plan to study at the University.

Approximately 1 500 learners arrived early in the morning on these two days, some of them coming from as far as Hoedspruit and White River in Mpumalanga, as well as from the Free State. A warm welcome by JuniorTukkie staff and members of the JuniorTukkie Student Society awaited the learners. Every learner received breakfast, a JuniorTukkie cap and an information pack.

This year the annual PMA Agri-Food Career and Bursary Fair was held simultaneously with the Grade 11 Top Achievers Function, which meant that the learners also had the benefit of visiting the 34 stalls from the agricultural business sector in the Rautenbach Hall.

Former popular Tuks FM DJ, Alex Caige got the ball rolling for the formal program on both days. Alex is currently employed by Highveld Stereo 94.7. An exciting but thought-provoking programme packed with pleasant surprises followed.

Prof Cheryl de la Rey (Vice-Chancellor and Principal), was the first person to take the stage and addressed the learners. An inspiring and interesting speech followed. The learners definitely enjoyed her thoughts and could gather numerous positive issues regarding their future studies.

Next up was Mr. Steven Ball, Deputy Director of TuksSport, preceded by a motivated and inspiring TuksSports video for all the sporting enthusiasts. He shared information on sport activities on offer as well as achievements of the different sports clubs at the University.

This was followed by an item delivered on both days by Tuks Camerata. All guests enjoyed the groups’ performance tremendously.

The highlight of the day was the exciting motivational talk conducted by the world-famous South African international cricket fast bowler and well-known sporting personality, Mr Fanie De Villiers. He had the learners literally on the front of their seats and completely motivated and inspired for their future. He shared a few experiences from his own life with the audience in his unique, humoristic, yet straight to the point, manner.

An excellent performance from Olympus’s brilliant Serenade Group provided our guests with loads of laughter and entertainment as well as a glimpse of student life on campus and in residences.

Mr Petrus Lombard, Project Manager: JuniorTukkie, introduced the JuniorTukkie Club and its advantages to the learners.

Learners who made prior bookings, were taken on a Campus Tour to explore the beautiful Campus surroundings and to experience some student life.

Judging by the positive feedback received, it is clear that our guests thoroughly enjoyed the day and found it extremely valuable.
