Japan and University of Pretoria discuss future cooperation

During the visit, Japanese Ambassador Yoshizawa and First Secretary Kaoru Yokotani met with Dean André Boraine, Deputy Dean Anton Kok, Prof Erika de Wet (Co-director of the Institute for International and Comparative Law in Africa (ICLA)), Prof Frans Viljoen (Director of the Centre for Human Rights), Prof Pieter Carstens (Head of the Department Public Law), Prof Charles Fombad (ICLA) and Mr Norman Taku (Assistant Director of the Centre for Human Rights). The delegation exchanged information and views ranging from postgraduate studies to contemporary issues pertaining to international law.  H.E. Mr Yoshizawa graduated from the Faculty of Law at the University of Tokyo and entered Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in April 1974.   Since March 2012, H.E. Mr. Yutaka Yoshizawa has been the Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of South Africa and concurrently accredited to Namibia, Lesotho, and Swaziland.  Prior to his service in South Africa H.E. Mr Yutaka Yoshizawa was the Ambassador of Japan to Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Tuvalu and Vanuatu (2008-2012). As he was posted in Pretoria from 1996 to 1998 as Deputy Chief of Mission (DCM) of the Embassy, this is the second time that he is serving in South Africa.   H.E. Mr. Yutaka Yoshizawa’s assignments in Japan included Director of Human Rights and Refugee Division of the Foreign Ministry (1991-1993), Cabinet Councilor in charge of the drafting of legislation for Japan’s participation in UN Peace Keeping Operations (1991-1992), Managing Director for General Affairs of the Japan Foundation, an organisation for international cultural exchange (2000-2004), and Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Capital Formation of the Development Bank of Japan (2006-2008).  H.E. Mr. Yoshizawa has almost forty years of experience in the diplomatic arena.
