Professor Naushad Emmambux from the University of Pretoria recently presented his novel research on SMART foods at a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Mauritius’ independence. SMART is an acronym for Safe, Marketable, Affordable, Ready-to-eat and Trendsetting products. His research applies food chemistry, cereal science and technology, food rheology, microscopy and nanotechnology to tackling malnutrition and diet-related non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and hypertension.
The Mauritian-borne academic was among alumni of IMCAD invited from universities across the world that were honoured with invitations to commemorate the golden jubilee. Prof Emmambux is an Associate Professor at the Department of Consumer and Food Sciences at the University of Pretoria and a research leader in the Department of Science and Technology and National Research Institute Centre of Excellence for Food Security. He was recognised by the ICMAD for his outstanding contribution to research. He was one of two research professionals invited from African universities.
Professor Emmambux has a reputable history of contributing to scientific knowledge and influencing innovation through research - the epitome of what UP prides itself on. His research shows how relatable researchers are focussing their passion, effort and energy on solving issues that make a difference in everyday life.
